Should I get a dental implant? The team at Lee Family Dentistry can help you decide! Implants work well if you have good oral health, implants work well, and a low-maintenance solution if you're missing a tooth.

Dental implants have become a popular option for replacing missing teeth, offering a long-lasting, natural-looking solution. But many patients ask: Should I get a dental implant?

The answer depends on several personal health and lifestyle factors.

Here’s what to consider before making your decision.

1. Oral Health

One of the most important factors when asking "Should I get a dental implant?" is the condition of your oral health. Healthy gums and sufficient jawbone density are essential for a successful implant. If you have gum disease, untreated cavities, or bone loss, these will need to be addressed first. In cases where the jawbone is too thin or weak, a bone graft may be required to create a stable foundation for the implant. If you have good oral health, implants are a great choice! (See the steps we follow when doing a dental implant - it may help in your decision process!)

2. Age and Overall Health

While dental implants are suitable for most adults, age and general health do play a role in the healing process. Patients under 20 typically aren’t ideal candidates due to ongoing jaw development. For older adults, certain health conditions—like uncontrolled diabetes or autoimmune disorders—can affect how well you heal after implant surgery. A thorough health review with your dentist is a must before moving forward. If you're in good health, getting an implant is usually successful.

3. Lifestyle Habits

Still wondering, “Should I get a dental implant if I smoke?” Habits like smoking or teeth grinding (bruxism) can increase the risk of implant failure. Smokers may experience slower healing and a higher chance of infection. If you grind your teeth at night (whether you need an implant or not!), your dentist may recommend a night guard. You'll want a night guard especially if you grind your teeth, to protect the implant site. We've had patients need implants because they ground their teeth - this causes tooth stress. (See our post on Why You Need a Nightguard>>)

4. Cost and Time Commitment

Dental implants are an investment in time and money. However, they are one of the most natural and durable solutions if a tooth is lost or needs extracting. The implant process typically involves three appointments over six months, with an initial consultation, placing of implant materials to heal, then the final crown placement. Some aspects of implants are not covered by dental coverage. We find the crown portion and lab fees are covered by most plans, but that still leaves several thousand dollars that is your responsibility. Consider, however, the alternatives - a space in your bit, a bridge or dentures. We have several clients who would agree implants are worth the investment!
